UAE residents apply for a Switzerland Schengen visa at VFS Global's visa application centres in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, which forward applications to the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi. The standard decision time is 15 calendar days once your application is complete.

Last checked: 20 October 2026. Switzerland's visa rules and documents are set by the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration and the Embassy of Switzerland, and can change. Always confirm current requirements on the official Embassy of Switzerland, Abu Dhabi website before you apply.

Where do UAE residents apply for a Switzerland visa?

Schengen visa applications for Switzerland (categories A and C) must be submitted at VFS Global's visa application centres, which operate in Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well as Manama, Bahrain, and are then forwarded to the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi for a decision (Embassy of Switzerland, Abu Dhabi: Schengen visa procedure). Book your appointment through the VFS Global website; VFS charges its own service fee on top of the official visa fee.

Who can apply through the Abu Dhabi embassy?

The Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi only accepts applications from legal residents of the UAE or Bahrain whose main destination is Switzerland or Liechtenstein. If you're a UAE resident of any nationality with a trip mainly to Switzerland, this is your route. Applicants must present a residence visa and Emirates ID valid for at least one month beyond their planned return date — if yours expires sooner, you'll need to show proof you've applied to renew it.

What if Switzerland isn't your main Schengen destination?

If Switzerland is only one stop on a wider Schengen trip, you generally apply through the consulate or visa centre of whichever Schengen country is your main destination — the country where you'll spend the most nights, or your first port of entry if time is split evenly. Applying through the Swiss route specifically only works when Switzerland (or Liechtenstein) genuinely is that main destination.

Documents you'll need

How long does it take, and when should I apply?

The general rule across the Schengen area, including Switzerland, is a decision within 15 calendar days of a complete application. The embassy notes this can extend in individual cases — for example, when consultation with other Schengen states is needed (up to 14 additional calendar days), or in rarer cases forwarded to Swiss authorities directly (up to 12 weeks). The embassy recommends applying at the earliest 6 months before travel, and no later than 15 days before your planned departure.

What does a Switzerland visa cost?

Switzerland's visa fee is a government-set amount, and VFS Global charges its own separate service fee for processing your application at its centre. Both are reviewed periodically, so rather than quote a figure that may be out of date by the time you read this, check the current combined cost directly on the VFS Global or embassy website before you book your appointment.

Single-entry or multiple-entry?

Like other Schengen visas, a Switzerland visa can be issued for a single entry or, for travellers with a good compliance history, multiple entries over a longer validity. Our general guide to multiple-entry Schengen visas from the UAE covers how that eligibility is usually assessed across the Schengen area.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Switzerland visa directly at the embassy?

No — categories A and C Schengen applications go through VFS Global's centres in Dubai or Abu Dhabi first; the embassy makes the decision after VFS forwards your file.

Do I need to be a UAE resident to apply through Abu Dhabi?

Yes. The Abu Dhabi embassy only accepts applications from legal residents of the UAE or Bahrain whose main Schengen destination is Switzerland or Liechtenstein.

How far in advance can I apply for a Switzerland visa?

Up to 6 months before your trip, and the embassy recommends applying no later than 15 days before you plan to travel.

What if my UAE residence visa expires soon after my trip?

You'll need at least one month of remaining validity beyond your planned return date, or proof that you've applied to renew your residency, to be accepted.

How long does a Switzerland Schengen visa take to process?

The standard is 15 calendar days, though some cases take longer if other Schengen states need to be consulted.

Can applicants from Bahrain use the same Abu Dhabi embassy?

Yes — the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi covers legal residents of both the UAE and Bahrain whose main destination is Switzerland or Liechtenstein.

Do I need a letter of invitation to visit Switzerland?

Only if you're staying with a private host rather than a hotel — in that case your host provides a letter of invitation and a declaration of sponsorship as part of your documents.
