If you live in the UAE and need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands, you can apply without leaving the country: applications are submitted through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, the service provider the Dutch government uses for visa collection in the Emirates. This guide covers who needs the visa, where to submit it, required documents, current fees, and the mistakes that most often sink a UAE-based application.

Last checked: 19 October 2026. Visa fees, document lists and processing times are set by the Dutch government and VFS Global and can change without notice — always confirm the current rules on the official Netherlands Worldwide page before booking your appointment.

Do I need a Netherlands Schengen visa if I live in the UAE?

It depends on your nationality, not your UAE residency. Holders of an Emirati passport do not need a visa to visit the Netherlands or any other Schengen state, according to Netherlands Worldwide, the Dutch government's official visa information site. Everyone else — the Indian, Filipino, South African, British, American and other expats who make up most of the UAE's population — still needs a Schengen visa regardless of how long they've lived or worked here. The upside is that UAE residence is exactly what lets you apply locally: your Emirates ID or residence visa is what establishes that you can submit in Dubai or Abu Dhabi rather than in your home country.

Where do I apply for a Netherlands Schengen visa in the UAE?

You submit your application in person at a VFS Global visa application centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi — the two UAE locations Netherlands Worldwide lists for Schengen visa submissions. Book your appointment directly with VFS Global; the Dutch government warns against using an intermediary claiming it can secure a faster slot. Each applicant, including children, needs their own appointment and must attend in person, since fingerprints are usually collected. You can apply up to six months before travel (nine for seafarers) but must submit at least 15 days before departure — applying earlier gives you a buffer if extra documents are requested.

Should I apply through the Netherlands or another Schengen country?

If the Netherlands is the only Schengen country on your itinerary, this doesn't apply. But if you're combining Amsterdam with, say, Paris or Berlin, Schengen rules require you to apply through the country that is your "main destination." EU guidance on how to apply for a Schengen visa defines this as the country where you'll spend the most nights, or, if your time is split evenly, the country you enter first. If the trip has one clear purpose — a conference, a wedding — the main destination is wherever that purpose happens, regardless of the nights split. Applying to the wrong country over this is an avoidable reason for refusal, so if your trip touches more than one Schengen state, use our visa finder tool to confirm the right embassy, or read our Schengen visa from the UAE guide for how multi-country itineraries are assessed.

What documents do I need for a Netherlands visa from the UAE?

VFS Global's official UAE document checklist for a Netherlands tourist or private-visit visa requires, among others:

Documents must be originals plus one copy, in Dutch, English, French or Spanish, per the VFS Global Netherlands UAE checklist. An incomplete file is one of the fastest ways to get rejected before it's even assessed, and the insurance rule in particular trips up first-time applicants — our guide to Schengen travel insurance from the UAE explains what actually satisfies it.

How much does a Netherlands Schengen visa cost, and how long does it take?

The Dutch government's official UAE consular fee schedule sets the following Schengen visa fees, payable in AED cash at the prevailing exchange rate or by card in EUR:

ApplicantVisa fee
Adult€90
Child aged 6–11€45
Child under 6Free

These figures come from Netherlands Worldwide's UAE consular fees page and exclude VFS Global's own service charge, billed on top and best confirmed at booking since it is reviewed periodically. On timing, Netherlands Worldwide states a standard application takes 18 to 21 calendar days from when your complete file is received, extending to a maximum of 45 days during busy periods, if your file needs further checks, or if mandatory consultation with other Schengen states applies to your nationality. A granted visa typically allows up to 90 days within any 180-day period — it does not guarantee entry, which border officials decide on the day.

What mistakes most often get UAE applications refused?

Beyond missing documents, frequent issues include inconsistent dates between the flight booking, insurance policy and accommodation proof; bank statements that don't clearly show the applicant's name or enough balance; and employer letters that are unsigned, undated, or missing a stated salary. If you've been refused before, or travel to Europe often enough that a single-entry visa feels limiting, read our articles on why Schengen visas get refused and on qualifying for a multiple-entry Schengen visa from the UAE. If you're still deciding between the Netherlands and other European destinations, our destination guides cover visa routes across the Schengen area too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Netherlands Schengen visa from the UAE if I'm not a UAE national?

Yes. What matters is that you hold valid UAE residence — your Emirates ID or re-entry permit is what lets you submit your application through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi instead of in your home country.

How far in advance should I apply for a Netherlands visa?

You can apply up to six months before travel (nine months for seafarers), and must apply at least 15 days before departure. Given that processing can take up to 45 days in busier periods, applying several weeks ahead is a safer margin than cutting it close to the minimum.

Do I have to go to the VFS Global centre in person?

Yes, every applicant, including children, must attend in person mainly because fingerprints are collected there. Exceptions exist for children under 12, people medically unable to give fingerprints, and applicants fingerprinted for a Schengen application within the last 59 months.

Can someone else collect my passport for me?

Yes, with a signed authorisation letter from you plus your proof of payment and valid ID, as set out on the official Netherlands Worldwide application page.

What happens if my Netherlands Schengen visa is refused?

The visa fee is not refunded, and you'll receive a reason for the refusal that determines whether and how you can appeal or reapply. Reviewing the common refusal reasons before you apply is the more effective way to avoid ending up here in the first place.

Getting a Netherlands Schengen visa application right the first time saves both the non-refundable fee and weeks of waiting — if you'd rather have your documents checked before they go to VFS Global, contact VisaFirst for help preparing your application.
